Whatever Matters Most Through the Lens

First half marathon

Lately, in addition to chili plantin’, i have been engrossed with the sport of marathon.

At first i was like, “OH HELL NO, why would i torture myself like that?”. At that time i was really of the mindset that marathons are crazy activities that super-fit, genetically blessed people can do.

And then after some training, i started to run 5km, then bumped up the volume to 7km and then finally 10km. I felt good about myself and i seriously considering joining a marathon someday. So i tried to join the half-marathon first.

I enrolled myself for the Putrajaya marathon a few months back. Problems with the registration system caused my entry to be missing and deemed UNPAID. I was so demoralized by this that i lost motivation to run straight away, because :-

  1. I wanted to accompany my brother along for the run, as he was just coming off a hard and messy break up.
  2. My partner in crime, Sit Mei has also registered to run and she also lost motivation after my entry was declined.
  3. After training and watching my diet for 2 months, the feeling of entry declined was like getting slapped on the face with a huge stinkin’ trout.

In a fit of anger, i registered for the next event, the 21KM Energizer Night Run. The website looks good and its sponsored by Adidas as opposed to the Putrajaya was sponsored and managed by , hooha.asia. So i quickly paid RM60 for the event, not knowing that the price is too high compared to Putrajaya night run which was RM25.

And then came Chinese New Year, and the eating binges LOL. I was without proper training for 2 months in the lead up to this event. The most i was running was 6-7km and that was done on Kampar with no slopes, and even then i was wheezing . Lucky for me, i did also enrolled for the 10KM Bareno run in Bkt Jalil, which is a stone’s throw from my home. I did this intentionally as a pre marathon preparation and also to get my motivation up by getting an not-so-difficult medal.

Bareno run Medal, checkpoint ribbons and cert.

After completed the 10KM Bareno run, i felt that my preparation needed a bit of work (i was dehydrated and fell sick that very night after the run), but other than that i felt ready to tackle the 21km.

I ramped up my training, running 8-10KM laps for the week leading up to the big night. I also avoided spicy food as much as i could. Thanks to SM and my family for that never ending motivations.

On the 25th, i collected my running jersey, I got the XXL because they ran out of sizes (doesnt it look like Adidas is trying to get rid of old stocks?) and bloody hell it didnt fit me, the jersey was too long neck area was too tight up. My brother suggested that i ditched the lousy shirt and went for the normal shirt that i ran with previously, a black Nike drifit singlet. SM’s one also didnt fit as it was too tight for her. What a letdown.

But we didnt let it get to us, i got an additional *shrunken* dri-fit Nike shirt that SM could wear and she was ok with it.

The big night

We kinda screwed up the race day as we were very busy and we ate McD burgers for lunch (bad bad choice, do not REPEAT!), we didnt even get to take a short nap leading up to the run. I’ve made up my mind to change this on my next run.

We reached Cyberjaya around 7pm, and my reporting time was 7.30pm and SM’s was at 8.30. We parked at HP’s car park and walk over to take the Park and Ride transit buses. I have to say that the service was good as buses were plentiful and it saves us from the parking squeezes at the end of the event. Oh yeah, on the way we saw 2 full marathoners on the last 5km stretch already, and it’s just 7.15pm and they started at 5.30pm.

7.45pm – I reached at the starting point, collected my headlamp and waited. I noticed the intense heat of the night, i was sweating just standing there. I thank God that its a night run and not a morning run as for sure i will get dehydrated and hit the wall early into my run.

Getting the headlamps working.

8pm – PREETTTT!!!! The half marathon run starts! I heard screams and shouts, and saw some cheerleaders cheering us on. What a motivation! ALRIGHT, BRING IT ON!

8.30pm – Feelin’ good as i approach the 5km mark. Found a pacer to pace and the view was nice (hehehehe). Also, got the first sponging station and passed on the idea of dropping ice cold water on my self, little did i know that was the ONLY sponging station that i will encounter that night.

9.15pm – passed the 10km mark. I was going slower than i was when i trained because i didnt want to overexert myself so early in the race. Also i felt some amount of rumbling in my stomach. GODDAMMIT BURGER!

image0031

Imagine ,that, swirling around in your stomach.

9.45pm – Passed the 15km mark. At this point i started stopping as the stomach rumbling developed into gas and i wasnt feeling well with a gassy stomach. Tried to expel some but there was too many runners behind me.

10pm – Cramps started to happen . The darn watering station had NO WATER! Stomach’s getting worse…

10.20pm – 16km mark. Bomba shower , was really refreshing and i found new energy to run by a volunteer whom said “2km left.” When in actual fact, i found out later, there’s 5 km left, pushing myself to run for nothing.

10.30pm – 17km mark. Cramps happening frequently now, can only manage to run short distances before resorting to walking and stretch my cramping calves. Warm gatorade helps somewhat but also aggravates my stomach condition. Can only resort to changing my stride to accomodate the weak calves.

10.45pm – 19km mark . have to resort to walking.

11.10pm – Crossed the finishing by running and cramped up at the red line.

11.30pm – Reached the goodie bag table which was like 150m away and SM found me looking blur and staggering about. Why the heck is the price collection table so bloody far away?

Finally,  i finished the race with 3hrs and 15minutes (according to my chip), a far far cry from my intended time. There was a lot of lesson learnt in this run that i will improve the next time around. It was a bitter sweet victory as i needed to wake up earlier tomorrow and dredge it through the whole day with painful muscles.

Thanks to my family, friends and SM especially for their support. Next up, Stan Chart KL Marathon!

Chili Plantin’ (update)

Well, its been 2 months now and the plants are doing great. Especially those that i have started earlier.

Currently in my plant list is :-

  1. Naga Jolokia (not the pc-1 tezpur type)
  2. Fatalii
  3. Orange Habanero
  4. Yellow Habanero
  5. Chocolate Habanero
  6. Peruvian White bullet Habanero
  7. Cambodia chili padi
  8. Tabasco
  9. Hungarian Hot Wax
  10. Red bell pepper (known to us as Capsicum, but that’s inaccurate as Capsicum is the genus)

The biggest one is the Naga Jolokia

Chili Plantin’

I was watching Man VS Food a while back, and in one episode Adam Richman ate a very HOT burger (the burger contains ghost chilies, purportedly the hottest chili in the world).

Ghost chilies? My curiosity peaked when Adam Richman needed 10mins to down ONE mouthful while groaning and saying “Its horrible, its horrible….” with tears flowing down his cheeks. My curios side was asking,

Is that chili really that hot?

How can i get some of it?

Will buying organic items from eBay be taking a risk?

Do i have an eBay account?

Is Robin really an underage girl instead of a boy?

Hokayyyyy scratch that last one.So before i know it, i was googling Ghost Chilies and found out that :-

  1. They originated from Assam, India.
  2. They are called Bhut or Naga Jolokia in India.
  3. They are currently the HOTTEST chili in the world (measuring over 1 Million Scoville Heat Units – the unit for measuring the heat of a chili)
  4. The second hottest chili (habaneros) leads a distant second with 500k Scoville Heat Units.
  5. The seeds are available on eBay and from Hippy Seed Company.

After a few YouTube videos of people trying the Bhut Jolokia, and reading some articles from the Hippy Seed Company, i dropped my order for some Naga Jolokia seeds.

I got the seeds and started planting them, using a empty cupboard as a mini greenhouse. The results has been superb, as the general consensus on the web is that the seeds typically needs 3-5 weeks to germinate and mine germinate and sprouted within a week.

I dropped a few into a plastic pot filled with soil and used some Jiffy pots also as I wanted to plant it on the ground. Jiffy pots are working like a wonder now, allowing me the leisure of space whilst getting more than a few plants to germinate and sprout. Besides Naga Jolokia, I am also planting some Cambodia Chili Padi’s.

Wave of the future

You might have heard of this new feature by Google called, Google Wave.

I have been very lucky to get an invite from my close friend, Xavier. Its been about a week, I’m still learning how to use it efficiently.

I wonder if i could embed a wave into this blog? Hmm…

*Update: I did it! btw, if you are not logged in to Google wave or you do not have a account then you can not see the wave.

Imbi Palace

Had a dinner in a place nearby Bkt Bintang area with my family to celebrate the Mid Autumn festival

Imbi Palace, situated in the road leading up to Sun Foong Bak Kut Teh.

Ambience:-

The decor was very nice, a rather stark contrast to the outlook of the restaurant. Looks like a nightclub on the outside but inside looks like a majestic dining hall.

Taste:-

The siew yoke and sharks fin were the highlight of the dinner. Siew Yoke’s skin is very crunchy but the meat was soft, juicy and tender (better than Happy Garden’s Mui Mui)

Sharks fin soup was meaty and simply delect.

A rather good choice for a dinner with the family, the ambience was nice. The pricing is good. A testament that expensive looking establishment doesnt necessarily mean expensive bills :)

Happy Anniversary

Me and SM went up to Lookout Point, Ampang to celebrate our belated anniversary.

We used to a GPS to get us there, and the road up was so dark that we nearly missed the entrance to Lookout Point. A word of caution to all, a GPS helps and a please drive really slow and carefully when going up. The traffic was fast and unrelenting and missing the entrance is easy.

When we got to the entrance, we also discovered another thing. Entrance was RM2, then we ask the toll booth guy if we can reach the peak by this entrance and he said “Boleh, pandu sampai atas pun boleh” (Sure, you can even drive up). So we drove up a very steep slope, nice the car parks are just beside the restaurants(Haven,Bread and Olives, and Lookout Restaurant, Panorama requires a walk up a flight of stairs). When we parked our cars and headed towards Lookout Point, we were approached by a Bangladesh and he ask for a Parking Fee of RM3. I mean really? you couldnt have included this into the entrance fee? So we dont have to pull out our wallets twice?

Anyways, we made our way into Lookout Restaurant and i was breath taken by the majestic view of KL city. The view coupled with the cool evening air after a drizzling spell was just perfect. Actually it would be perfect if we got a balcony seat. The wooden seats are abit uncomfortable though

The food wasnt much to shout at, but its decent portion. Its not too expensive but we did need to exercise caution as some dishes like TIGER prawns only gave us normal small looking prawns.

The atmosphere in Haven is nice and its not crowded. They also provided Hookah/Shisha for those smoking afficionados. Pretty nice place to chill out after a long day.

Will make a return trip back? Most def. For the view.

090909 Celebration

LOL, a bit late huh? Well, sorry la. I didnt want to put up pictures before i found a suitable gallery plugin for me blog.

Went out for a nice dinner and a movie to commemorate 090909 :D

Funny thing is, before this dinner , i was arguing with some guy over the rationality of celebrating a trivial date 090909. The answer i gave was "Simply to cherish the fact that we're still together on 090909".

Angels Children Home

Last Saturday i went to Angel’s Children Home for an event last Saturday night.

It was a Barbecue Buffet event with the children with plenty of games held in conjunction with the Lantern/Mooncake festival.

Spending time with the kids really takes my mind off the stress of everyday live, they seemed to live so carefree and pure, really a stark contrast from adults. There was great food, great games and there was also a lantern walk, something that i didn't do for a long time.

Angels Children Home is located at :-

  • No. 126, Jalan Hujan Gerimis 2,
  • Taman Overseas Union,
  • Batu 5 Jalan Kelang Lama,
  • 58200 Kuala Lumpur

p/s: dont mind the date on the photos, its WRONG, coz i sux :P

Gym in the pocket

I just got myself some rubber.

A big green piece of rubber and its called Gym in the Pocket. I just got back into a serious exercise routine and thought this thing will compliment it.

Gym in the pocket GREEN

Gym in the pocket GREEN

Its like an oversized rubber string which is roughly the length from my leg to my waist. Its used in resistance training in the absence of weights

It comes with instructions to work out every part of the body.

I actually got tired of just plain , body-weight, squats and got this to work on my back as well as shoulder during tea time.

I also wanted to quit coffee and i find that a bit of exercise at 3pm does wonder to keep me awake and alert.

So far, today is Day#1 of GITP and i already did :-

Name Set Rep
Squats 1 30
Dead lift 2 12
Curls 1 15

I felt some amount of pump (nothing when compared to weights though) and got my heart pumping. Its a decent way to workout, i feel.

Well, check back for more update on my usage :)

*Update : Just fresh from my 2nd session. I felt the pump this time around.
